Scoglietto di Portoferraio

Elba IslandBoat
About This Site
Scoglietto is a small barren islet about 1.5 km north of Capo Bianco and Le Ghiaie, just minutes by boat from Portoferraio. It sits at the heart of Elba's oldest marine biological protection zone, a no-take area since 1971, which has produced exceptional fish life. A continuous wall wraps the rock: the seaward north-west side drops past 40 m and is studded with gorgonians, while the south side begins around 20 m with two accessible caves. A bronze Christ statue rests on the sand at about 40 m. With cave, reef and wall options at a range of depths, it suits everyone from cavern-curious recreational divers to deep specialists, though the deeper wall and statue make it primarily an intermediate-to-advanced site.

Scoglietto is an isolated islet roughly 1.5 km off Capo Bianco, so its deep north-west wall is fully open to the Ligurian Sea and takes the brunt of the NW Mistral/Tramontana, the strongest regional wind, as well as any northerly wind-wave swell. The body of Elba shadows the south and south-east sectors, keeping the shallower cave side relatively calm. Because the rock stands alone, dives are best on settled days when the dominant NW-N wind is light.
