Tucked into a small cove on Madeira's sheltered south-southeast coast, Reis Magos is fully shadowed by the island from the dominant NW Atlantic groundswell and from the prevailing N-NE trade winds, which keeps it calm and divable most days. Its exposure is limited to swell wrapping in from the south through southeast (S-SSE), when an incoming wind sea or rare southerly swell can build surge in the shallows and make the steps exit awkward. The flanking headlands of the Garajau reserve further blunt energy from the southwest.
