About This Site
Garajau is the flagship dive of Madeira and the most famous site on the island, set inside Portugal's oldest marine reserve (protected since 1986) directly below the Cristo Rei cape. It is renowned for large, fearless dusky groupers that swim right up to divers, against a backdrop of volcanic boulders, ledges and walls that tumble from about 15 m down past 40 m. The combination of habituated big fish, dramatic terrain and excellent water clarity makes it a beginner-to-advanced photography paradise.

Warnings for today

  • Strong winds expected

Sitting on Madeira's leeward south coast below the Ponta do Garajau cape, the site is shielded by the island landmass from the dominant NW Atlantic groundswell, so the north-through-west sectors are effectively blocked. The exposed window faces open water to the south, where southerly swell and southerly wind-waves can build and stir up surge along the wall. Conditions are usually calm and diveable, with the boat trip from Funchal cancelled mainly during strong S–SE blows.
