About This Site
Pedra da Greta (also called Pe de Terra) is a well-known natural rocky reef off the eastern Algarve near Faro, rated of outstanding biological interest in dive-site atlases. A 20-40m-wide rock rises from the surrounding sand to within about 1.5m of relief, riddled with archways, cracks and crevices, making it a fish-rich reef alternative to the area's popular wreck dives. Shallow depths and generally gentle conditions make it a relaxed, marine-life-focused dive suitable for newly certified divers.

Sitting on the Algarve south coast, the site is shadowed from the dominant NW Atlantic groundswell by the Portuguese mainland, so the landward N-NW-W sectors are effectively blocked and conditions are usually calm. The main exposure is to S, SE and SW wind-driven swell and the occasional southerly Atlantic storm, when surge and reduced visibility build over the reef. Being submerged and offshore, even moderate southerly seas can make the boat ride and surface conditions uncomfortable.
