West-facing beach inside La Jolla Bay where even winter west and west-northwest swells arrive heavily reduced. Point La Jolla shades the beach from the south through west-southwest, and summer south swells wrap in only as a weak remnant. North through east are well protected. The La Jolla Submarine Canyon offshore spreads long-period swell energy away from the canyon head, keeping the Shores noticeably smaller than neighboring open beaches while driving cold upwelling.
