About This Site
HMS Coriolanus is northern Istria's second-most-iconic wreck and the region's classic introduction to wreck diving. A 50 m British Shakespeare-class minesweeper, she struck a mine on 5 May 1945 and now sits fully upright and exceptionally well preserved on a flat sandy floor in open water about 6 nm off the NW Istrian coast. The exterior can be toured in a single dive, with deck guns, anti-aircraft and machine guns, and depth-charge gear all still in place. The bridge tops out near 17 m while the deck and seabed lie at 26-30 m.

This is an open-water wreck on a flat sandy plain roughly 6 nautical miles offshore, with the Istrian mainland lying to the east, so the eastern sectors toward Novigrad are strongly reduced and give the wreck its main shelter. The site is wide open to the south and southwest, taking the full fetch of a Jugo (Sirocco) blowing up the long SE-to-NW Adriatic axis, which builds the largest and longest waves here. A Bura (Bora) from the NE blows offshore off the mainland mountains and is fierce but short-fetch on this seaward side, while the curving northern Istrian coast gives only partial shelter from the N and NW.
