1. Breakwater Wall

Breakwater Wall is the go-to site for new divers and Monterey veterans alike. Sheltered by the Coast Guard pier, this site offers the most protected conditions in the area. The wall itself is covered in colorful invertebrates – hydroids, tunicates, nudibranchs, and anemones create a living tapestry.

The real stars here are the sea lions. These playful pinnipeds are almost guaranteed and will often swim right up to you, sometimes blowing bubbles in your face or tugging at your fins. Ample parking is available at the Coast Guard Pier parking lot.

2. Point Lobos State Marine Reserve

• Type: Shore dive (rocky entry)
• Depth: 45-80 feet
• Visibility: Often 20+ feet

Often called the "crown jewel" of California diving, Point Lobos State Marine Reserve offers some of the most pristine underwater conditions you'll find anywhere. As a fully protected reserve, the marine life here is abundant and unafraid of divers. Sea otters, harbor seals, and sea lions are common sightings, along with lingcod, cabezon, and the occasional leopard shark or wolf eel.

The kelp forests are absolutely spectacular, with towering stalks creating cathedral-like atmospheres when the light filters through. Most divers use the boat ramp at Whalers Cove for safer entry, though shore entry is possible. The reserve requires advance reservations and a dive permit – these are limited, so plan ahead.

3. McAbee Beach

• Difficulty: Beginner
• Type: Shore dive (beach entry)
• Depth: 20-40 feet
• Visibility: Typically 15 feet

Right in the heart of Cannery Row, McAbee Beach offers easy access and protected conditions with rich kelp forest habitat. A staircase leads down to the small beach, making entry straightforward. The site is convenient if you're staying in downtown Monterey.

The reef structure here supports diverse marine life including nudibranchs, rockfish, lingcod, and the occasional octopus. Street parking is available along Cannery Row, though it can be challenging to find spots on weekends.

4. Lover's Point

Located in Pacific Grove, Lover's Point provides accessible shore diving with kelp forests and rocky structures. The cove offers some protection from swell, making it diveable on days when more exposed sites might be rough.

Harbor seals, sea lions, and a variety of rockfish are common sightings. Look for nudibranchs on the rocks and giant Pacific octopuses hiding in crevices. There's a parking lot at Lover's Point Park, but it can get crowded on weekends.

5. Monastery Beach (North & South)

• Depth: 45-100+ feet
• Visibility: 20-25 feet

Monastery Beach – nicknamed "Mortuary Beach" by locals – is not a site for the inexperienced. The beach drops off steeply and powerful shore break can make entry and exit extremely challenging. However, for those with the skills to handle it, Monastery offers access to the spectacular Carmel Canyon.

The north and south sections offer different experiences. Only dive here if you have significant shore diving experience and the conditions are calm.
