About This Site
Épave de la Meulière is the canonical wreck dive of the southern Gulf of Ajaccio: a 57m French Navy steam minesweeper that ran aground on the rocks below Punta di a Castagna in May 1941 and sank a few days later during salvage. Resting in just 6-12m at the foot of the Castagna rock near Portigliolo, the broken hull has scattered over the years but the ship's hallmark features remain exposed and photogenic - the large triple-expansion steam engine sitting beside its boiler, and the unusual twin-propeller gear transmission driven by a single motor. The shallow depth, easy access and good light make it a favourite for beginners, training dives and underwater photographers alike.

The wreck lies in the shallows at the foot of Punta di a Castagna on the southern shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio, tucked into the peninsula's northern flank so it faces out across the gulf mouth to the NW. The Castagna headland and the Corsican coast behind Portigliolo shelter the whole southern arc - from the SW (Libeccio) round through S to the eastern sectors - leaving the site open only through the WNW-NW window across the gulf entrance, with the WSW largely blocked by the point. The energy that reaches it is NW Mistral swell and wind-wave funnelling down and across the gulf, so dives are best on calm days or with easterlies off the land, when this sheltered southern corner is glassy.
