About This Site
An active submarine volcano that last erupted in 1720, rising from the deep on the Terceira Rift midway between São Miguel and Terceira. Its summit reaches to just 13 m below the surface and the ~450 m-wide crater drops from about 12 to 25 m, with four outer peaks at 40-50 m. The unique draw is the active hydrothermal field: curtains of warm gas bubbles and fumaroles rising from the volcanic seabed, set among abundant pelagic fish life on a remote, rarely dived seamount.

  • High waves expected

A fully isolated mid-Atlantic seamount roughly 37 nautical miles offshore with no surrounding landmass, so it has 360-degree exposure to the open ocean. The dominant NW Atlantic groundswell (W-NW-N) and any wind direction reach it unobstructed, leaving no sheltered sector. Dives are strictly weather-dependent and only possible in calm, settled conditions.
